Community Literacy Program:
Houston Link to Learning is looking for a Community Literacy Program Assistant to assist with the development and delivery of all Community Literacy Programming.
Qualifications and Qualities required:
- Previous experience in the literacy field would be an asset
- Preference will be given to someone with a social worker certificate or social work experience
- Computer skills
- Knowledge and appreciation of aboriginal diversity in the community of Houston
- A people person who is able to work well as part of a team.
- Flexible and understand that programming changes to reflect the needs of the learners.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
Position term:
Part time, Temporary
Nov 1, 2007 to June 30, 2007 for 10 hours per week (
With exception of 2 weeks at Christmas and 1 week at Spring Break)
Salary:
Commensurate with experience
Starting at $15.00 per hour

Focus: Assistant the Community Literacy Practitioner and the Community Literacy Coordinator in meeting program deliverables. |

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Financial and Fundraising
- Assists with the development and coordination of fundraising activities related to Community Literacy programming.
- Community and Public Relations
- Assists with the recruitment of volunteers
- Assists with the promotion of community literacy programs and services within community
- Programming and Services
- Assists with the recruitment of participant families for all programs.
- Assists the Practitioner and coordinator with development and delivery of community literacy programming.
- Assists with the modification of program curriculum to suit changing needs, interests and circumstances.
- Build on and use learners experience and knowledge
- Encourage active participation of learners in all aspects of the learning process
- Incorporate traditional aboriginal knowledge of appropriate aboriginal systems
- Assist with using a variety of teaching methods to match learner’s needs, learning styles and reasons for learning
- Assist with the introduction of a range of strategies that can be used to develop reading and math skills
- Assist with building a strong positive learning relationship between program participants and staff
- Encourage the learner to share ideas, ask questions, make comments and cooperate with each other and program staff
- Assist with the collection of statistics.
- Assist with the modification of learning plans and program as needed
- Promote and model HLL values and philosophy
- Help learner explore options for learning and apply their learning to other contexts
- General Administrative
- Maintains a daily descriptive journal of all activities.
- Assists with program inventory
- Assists with program evaluation
- Participates in reflective practice
- Other tasks as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience working with Adult learners is an asset
- Minimum 2 years experience working in education and/ or social work related fields
- 2 years combined education in any of the following social work, psychology, teaching
- Knowledge and appreciation of aboriginal diversity in the community of Houston
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- High level computer skills required – Word, Excel, Email, Internet

Title: Early Childhood Educator
Title of immediate supervisor: Community Literacy Coordinator
Basic function and purpose: The Early Childhood Educator is responsible for leading the children and parents in activities to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical and emotional growth.
Tasks
- Develop and implement activities for the preschool children attending the pre-kindergarten program with the focus on Kindergarten preparation.
- Develop and implement activities for parents and children together within the Learning Together Drop in program.
- Lead the children in activities that promote early literacy skills.
- Work in partnership with the elementary schools to ensure that the children develop routines and experiences similar to Kindergarten.
- Evaluate the progress of the children assessing them at the beginning and the end of the program.
- Observe the children for signs of learning disabilities or emotional problems.
- Discuss progress of children with parents and other staff members as necessary.
- Guide and assist children in the development of proper eating, dressing and toilet habits.
- Coordinate and supervise volunteers for the classroom.
- Attend job related in-services, workshops and meetings as required.
- Maintain statistics for each program and activity.
- Maintain a journal of tasks and time spent on tasks to be submitted to the coordinator bi-weekly.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times
- Perform other related tasks and duties as required.

- A class 5 driver license and access to own vehicle.

- A Community Care Facilities Branch BC license to Practice
- Must have 5 years experience in a preschool or Kindergarten setting.
- Valid First Aid certificate.
